The European Year of Volunteering 2011

2011 mark the tenth anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers by the UN. This event showed that public attention to volunteers and their contribution to society lead governments and other stakeholders to commit to joint action. Efforts can be combined with the activities of the UN in 2011 to consolidate the progress made to date and develop a European policy agenda for volunteering "2011 +”.

While the EU is paying increasing attention to all forms of volunteerism in recent years, there is still no comprehensive strategy and action at European level to encourage, recognize, facilitate and support volunteering in order to realize its full potential.

The goals of the European Year of Volunteering 2011 proposed by the European Commission are:

  • To work to achieve an environment that increases volunteerism in the EU - anchor volunteering as part of promoting civic participation and people to people activities in the context of the EU.
  • To empower the charity volunteer organizations and improve the quality of volunteering - to facilitate and promote volunteerism networking, mobility, cooperation and synergy between voluntary organizations and other sectors in the context of the EU.
  • To reward and recognize voluntary activities - promoting appropriate incentives for individuals, businesses and voluntary development organizations and gain a more systematic recognition for volunteering among policy makers, civil society organizations and workers through skills and skills developed through volunteering.
  • To raise awareness about the value and importance of volunteerism - to raise awareness about the importance of volunteering as an expression of civic participation and an example of activity of people to people to contribute to topics that are of common interest to all Member States, as development such as a harmonious social and economic cohesion.

Fundar, as a member of the European Volunteer Centre, we will spread all the relevant information on this important year, and develop several activities to bring the world of volunteering to a highlighted place.

As the first major activity, Fundar hosted last April the First Founding Multisectoral Forum European Volunteer Centre, where working groups of NGOs, government, and companies across Europe were created (led by the head of the EU 2011, John McDonald), to draw a work plan to ensure the continuing success of the European Year.
